A Bachelor of Science in Biology prepares graduates to become employees for the science-based industries, medical fields, and agencies that use modern technology or to teach Biology and a selected minor at the secondary level. Students in this major must choose from Integrative Biology Specialization or Biology Education Specialization. 

The Integrative Biology Specialization provides an excellent background in computer science/information systems technology as well as a solid foundation in biology, supporting sciences, and mathematics. The graduates of this program will be capable of problem solving and will gain research experience through one-on-one faculty mentorship.  This program also provides an excellent foundation for persons wishing to pursue a specialized professional career such as medicine, dentistry, etc. or to obtain advanced education in the health fields or biological science.  The Integrated Biology Specialization curriculum is aligned with the Exercise Science BS program, which allows for students to double-major with some careful planning.  DSU has an articulation agreement with SDSU for students who have completed a bachelor’s degree in Biology who wish to apply to the accelerated nursing program at SDSU and obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. 

The Biology Education Specialization follows the guidelines of the National Science Teachers Association that a biology core and supporting science, computer and Mathematics courses.  Students in this major will have an education technology endorsement.

System-wide General Education Requirement (30 Credits)


Students choosing the Integrated Biology Specialization must take MATH 114  (or a course requiring MATH 114 as a prerequisite), BIOL 151 /151L, and BIOL 153 /153L as part of the System-wide General Education Requirement. 

Students choosing the Biology Education Specialization must take MATH 114  (or a course requiring MATH 114 as a prerequisite), EPSY 210 , and  INED 211  as part of the System-wide General Education Requirement.  Students in the Biology Education Specialization must also have a grade of “C” or better in MATH 114 , ENGL 101 , CMST 101 , EPSY 210 , and INED 211 .

All Professional Education courses must be completed with a grade of “C” or better.

Students planning to pursue a career in medicine or health professions are encouraged to take CHEM 326 CHEM 328 , CHEM 460 MATH 123 , PHYS 111  and PHYS 113 .

Two of these electives will have been met upon completion of BIOL 151 /151L and BIOL 153 /153L as part of the System-wide General Education Requirement.
