General University Information

Faculty Attendance at Graduation Ceremonies

Dakota State University holds two commencement ceremonies, one in December and one in May. Faculty members can choose to attend either or both the fall and the spring graduation ceremonies, but are expected to participate in at least one. Remote faculty members are exempt from this requirement.  Faculty should communicate with their college office about which ceremony they plan to attend.

Legislative Relations

All institutionally lobbied relationships and negotiations with the state legislature, including its committees, shall be coordinated through the Board of Regents. No subordinate official representing the university may appear before the legislature or committee except with the permission of the board or when requested by the state legislature itself. Staff members are free to represent their own views but may not represent them as institutional views. See SDBOR 1:12.

Purchases

The university is governed by the purchasing regulations established by the State of South Dakota and the Board of Regents. Administrative purchasing authority rests solely with the university’s director of auxiliary services. Procurement regulations apply to all expenditures regardless of the source of university funds. All purchasing shall be done by the college office, and the university is not financially liable for supplies, equipment, or services except those purchased through the College Office.

Room Reservation

Courses are assigned to rooms when the schedule is published. For scheduling meetings or events, DSU uses a centralized room-scheduling application, currently 25Live. On submission, the request will be reviewed, and a notification email will be sent to confirm the reservation. Each building has an approver that will evaluate submitted requests and then either approve or deny. Questions around room configuration or amenities should be directed to the staff location in that building.

Sales to Students

Either full-time or part-time personnel are at all times prohibited from soliciting or selling articles or services to students, unless specifically approved by the chief administrator of the institution. See SDBOR Policy 3:7.

Smoking and Tobacco Use

Smoking and tobacco products, including e-cigarettes and vaporizers, are prohibited on DSU property except in the designated areas. In addition, the sale or free distribution of smoking and tobacco products is prohibited on any university property or at any university-sponsored events. No ads featuring smoking or tobacco products will be allowed in the student newspaper or other university media, and campus organizations will not accept money from tobacco companies. See DSU Policy 02-75-00.
